The Tri-County Fair
Oh boy I am so excited, the tri-county fair is coming up this weekend! I started a project on the ORG for it, and other state and county fairs. If you have no idea the ORG is, well, then you don't care that I made a project there, I bet. Also exciting; school is starting. Whew I am a bit nervous, going back to school after all this time. People keep reminding me that I'll love it, to which I always say, oh yeah! But then I immediately go back to pretending it's not about to happen, because I'm still nervous. | | Wednesday, June 6th, 2007 | | 3:48 pm |

Done.
I finished the two revisions of papers for my class and the final take-home exam. Whew. It was a really enjoyable class, made all the more so by discussing the topics and working on some of the papers with my Sister in Law. I really liked taking just one class while I work full time. I could not in any stretch of the imagination do more than one while working, and the time does get tight. But you do better work than when you're taking 4 classes and everything is due at once. | | Friday, May 11th, 2007 | | 11:50 am |

Aikido is hard for me
Yesterday I was the testing partner for my friend, who I haven't been on the mat with for 3 weeks. Heh. I'd like to say I didn't suck, and well, I didn't COMPLETELY suck. I just don't know the techniques that well, and got confused about where to put my feet for each one. I think I would have done better if I hadn't been out for a week followed by missing her by one and then her being out for one. | | Sunday, May 6th, 2007 | | 5:05 pm |
summary
It's been a power packed fun couple of days. Fun with friends, fun with plants, fun with mom, fun with neighbors, fun with cats, getting food, cleaning up, and being outside pretty much covers it. I saw Blades of Glory with mom and it was funny. Gotta write an op-ed now. bye! | | Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007 | | 4:03 pm |
Map of online communities, and my stats
I went to the doctor. Here are my stats: BMI 21 BP 100/160 Pulse 68 (resting) The doctor and nurse said I was great! They must be vampires, then, because they're making me get blood tests anyway. Aw. In other news, I found the map of the internets communities! Thanks XKCD! | | Tuesday, May 1st, 2007 | | 2:12 pm |
May Day, May Day... there won't be enough of us
Happy May Day. I support immigrants working here. In my family policy class we learned that the population in industrialized countries is going down. If we want people to be there to help our parents and ourselves when we get old, there are not going to be enough of us to do it ourselves. We need immigration to open up not because we turn our noses up at the jobs available, but because there simply won't be enough of us. In other news, I support working people everwhere. I guess that fails on the 'new' part of 'news'. (should I have said "in other s..."? Naw...) | | Monday, April 30th, 2007 | | 9:25 am |
Plants
"Should I stay or should I go now?" That's been the question of the week. Everything is pointing me towards staying here, but that wasn't what I wanted... I think at heart I am like a plant. I like to stay where I've sprouted. In non-metaphorical news, I planted so many seedlings. The Arugala is already up! It took only 5 days! The chinese broccoli took only 5 days too! A Kentucky Pole Bean came up, and I promptly dumped it on its head. Whoops. Hopefully it will recover. The broccoli and bean I definitely planted too early.... whoops... I will have to keep potting them up as they grow until they can go outside. Also the shiso I planted inside sprouted. Outside, not so much. i. e. not at all. The garlic is up and we now have 12 out of 13 emerged. And the peas (outside) and cukes (inside) show no sign of sprouting. All very exciting. | | Tuesday, April 17th, 2007 | | 12:40 pm |

Portent for the day There's a serious problem in society when basic skills are not honored and the craftspeople that make the building blocks of civilization possible are looked down upon. The people who make your food, build your roads, buildings, and bridges, provide your water, care for your children --purveyors of the essential arts-- are the key to good lives. If they don't get the respect and pay they deserve, if they can't support themselves with the work they do and take pride in it, everything will degrade, degrade, degrade until civilization is crumbled. | | | Monday, March 26th, 2007 | | 12:36 pm |

I went to New York city and met up with three people I met online through the Ze Frank forum. We had a blast. Yesterday Ze Frank flew to Saint Louis and gave the remixes and video to Ray. I gave Ze candy. I am so happy about the video for Ray project now. | | Tuesday, February 20th, 2007 | | 1:40 pm |

Two big things happened yesterday, and I am sadder about both of them than I expected. The most important thing is that my husband's grandmother died. I knew I would miss her very much, but since she hadn't been well for the last 8 months, I thought I was prepared for her to go. I am suprised by how much I miss her already. I knew her for 8 years, and until she fell ill she was smart as a whip. She remained warm and loving throughout. She was always very accepting of me, and included me in everything she did for her other grandkids. She was a good listener, and storyteller, and most of all, gave excellent advice. She was 96, and walked 4 blocks every day until she broke her ankle 8 months ago. She grew up poor and worked hard to ensure her family had what they needed. She was the first woman purchaser in the United States. She used to bake pies and cookies and she helped her husband build their house. She and her husband also outfitted a van and drove all over the country. They also traveled the world together. My husband's mother was her second child, and though they had spent their savings to send her older brother to college and there was nothing left for my mother in law, she made her a deal: have dinner on the table for me when I come home, and I will go get a job to save the money so you can go to college. That was when she started working as a secretary and was eventually promoted to do her boss's job as a Purchaser for the company. I am going to miss her a lot. The other thing that happened is the joint-project video I took some of the footage for is up. I feel the deflation of having worked a lot on something that is now done. Although I think the person who dreamed up the project and put it all together did a great job, to be perfectly honest I'm also disapointed that, though lots of footage I took made it in, footage I took of myself didn't make the cut. I think I'll have to come back to the video later, when my mood is not so influenced by more important things, and see how I feel about it then. I'll probably just be glad it got made, and that I got to help. | | Saturday, February 3rd, 2007 | | 10:26 am |
Racism
I think the debate about Biden's recent comment on Obama will seem different to you based on how much racism you believe is out there. I used to think racism was largely a thing of the past in the U.S., but after working with a lot of openly racist (and other -ist) people, and some experiences too personal for me to share, I've come to realize racism is everywhere in the U.S., everywhere. In your liberal friends, your family, people who hate racism... it has gone somewhat underground in this country, and there are people who fight against their own racism, but it is in every corner of this country. The question is, is a slip like Biden's unimportant, because there was nothing racist behind it, or is it a bad sign that his racism is not far below the veneer? Because of my perspective on racism in America, I have come to believe the latter. I wrote this as a post in a forum. I was worried about writing it. It is a very sensitive subject, and over time my views have changed so much. |
